Lights, camera – dance! San Ramon’s 2011 winter dance show, Dancing with Wolves, packed a huge punch. The show proceeded for three days from November 16-18. Each night the students in the dance level two, three, four, five and “six” put on 32 numbers in all, also including performances by dance line, can-can, the seniors’ “It Ain’t the End of the World” and the finale.

Lindsay Eklund (9), a student in Dance 4 said, “We worked really hard on the dance show and I think it went really well.” Many of the dancers put in hours of choreographing and rehearsal. “Almost all the dances were choreographed by the people in the dance show.” Lindsay said. Each number showed each dancer’s abilities and accomplishments.

Dance 6, composed of all male performers, astonished the audience with their creative hip hop dance. Rap music was played while they performed various popping and locking moves and tricks including the classic worm. The music had an upbeat and modern feel. Each dancer wore a different type of skater style shoe along with jeans and matching purple shirts that said “D6”. The men’s hip hop dance was exciting, energetic and an overall success.

The award winning can-can performed energetically. Their number consisted of multiple kick lines, screaming and twirling of dresses. Their costume dresses were completely black except for a few lines of thick fabric which protruded underneath each dress. These pieces of fabric were a different color for each dress. Overall the number showed each dancer’s talent of flexibility and endurance. The dance was fun and exciting.

The entire performance was held in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at San Ramon. The new colored LED lights gave each number a different feeling and effect. The large disco ball in the PAC was used to give a few dances extra sparkle and the strobe light effect was demonstrated in a handful of numbers as well.

The costumes that were worn varied from short dresses to cargo pants to spandex accompanied with a variety of shirts. Hayleigh Swartz (10) from Dance 4 said “The choreographer gets to choose what costume would best compliment their dance on stage.” Many of the costumes were surprising and different from the last.

“A lot of work goes into getting the costumes and props.” Hayleigh said. A number of props were also incorporated into the show. Blocks were used to show height variation. Tea sets, books, pencils, backpacks and a number of different signs were just a few objects that were used in the performance. The items were used to help act out each dance and draw the audiences’ attention.

The 2011 winter dance show, Dancing with Wolves, at SRV was a big hit. The performance attracted and entertained both students and adults alike.
