Varsity football wins first NCS playoff game

On Friday, 11/18, the San Ramon varsity football team came out victorious in the first NCS playoff game against the Castro Valley Trojans, with a final score of 42-14. The Trojans entered the game on a six game winning streak and left with a loss and a record of 6-5.

The home game began with a 7pm kickoff, San Ramon rolled over Castro Valley, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. The Wolves drove down the field on a 13 play 74-yard drive ending when Sean Miller (12) scored on a 16-yard pass from Zach Kline (12) . Castro Valley then missed a 24-yard field goal, and San Ramon responded with a 23-yard scoring pass from Kline to Ryan Dunn (11) to put the score at 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wolves’ domination continued throughout the second quarter. Their defense shut out Castro Valley, and the offense added to their lead with a 21-yard pass to Justin Bangay (11) and a 34-yard pass to Jordan Weiss (12). San Ramon went into the locker room with a 28-0 lead.

The Trojans fought back in the third quarter with two touchdowns to cut the Wolves’ lead to 28-14.

But Weiss scored with 11:21 left to go in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run, and with 1:47 left to go in the game, Kline ran the ball in from six yards for a final touchdown to ice the win.

Kline completed 18 of 29 passes for 296 yards. Weiss lead the team in receiving with 84 yards on four receptions followed by Michael Tagliaferri (12) with 74 yards on five receptions. Weiss also lead the team in rushing with 101 yards in 16 attempts.

Defensive highlights included Dunn with a total of nine tackles, six of which were solo and three of which were assists. San Ramon intercepted the ball three times including twice on back to back possessions. Dunn intercepted the ball once, and Brian Danis (11) made two interceptions. Colin Nelson (12) sacked Castro Valley quarterback Luke Huerta once for a loss of eight yards.

Number 10 seed Castro Valley finished their season with a record of 6-5. Number 7 seed San Ramon went on to beat previously undefeated Logan High school on 11/25. This Saturday, Dec. 3, come watch San Ramon play the rival Mustangs at Monte Vista. Tickets go on sale at lunch, brunch, and after school starting Wednesday, Nov. 30.
