A Not So Silent Night

The winter event, Not so Silent Night, heated up the crowd of Oracle Arena on night #1. Oracle Arena welcomed the cold bodies as they anticpated a show from some of the greatest rock bands of this generation. The line up started with a breaking out local band contest winner known as the Fritz Montana. Their sound was like a fusion of No Doubts reggae toned beats mixed the Black Keys raspy vocals and bluesy rock. The set was simple and resembled that of garage band putting on a hopeful show for the one’s listening. Fritz Montana put on a great opening for first arrivals before the more popular bands took the stage.

Capital Cities started it off, they are known for their hit song Safe and Sound, whose catchy alternative pop beats got the first to arrive to get up and move their feet. Capital Cities was the only band to use some brass instruments- and with style at that. Not since Cake had I seen a crowd go crazy over a trumpet solo, but as they finished their set, that is when the arena really started to fill up in great anticipation for the English rock band, Arctic Monkeys.

This band recently released a brand new album simply named AM which holds their new song Do I Wanna Know?, that has been blaring through alternative radio stations. When the host had finally announced for the Arctic Monkeys to take the stage the crowd went crazy as girls melted and guys shouted. The band waltzed onto the stage as nonchalant as could be completely outfitted in black and white suits that were all- too- formal for the show, but  the Arctic Monkeys knew they had the right to pull it off. Wasting no time, they opened up with the slow drum clap of Do I Wanna Know?

The band showcased their new album playing all the hits from Arabella and its switching paces to Why do You Only Call Me When You’re High? and it’s smooth bass lines. The band even had a call back to an old favorite playing I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor. Distorted guitars and grungy bass lines went all out on the set of the Arctic Monkeys pulling off a great show leading into the darker alternative sounds of AFI mostly known for their song Miss Murder.

Surprisingly, the band steered away from their latest album but instead played their early 2000 songs, getting the crowd to sing a long to the chant of Miss Murder and bellowing out lyrics of Girls not Grey. Their heavier pieces later started the nights first mosh pits just goes to show how amped their sounds get the crowd.
