“Super Bowl City” hosted by San Francisco for Super Bowl 50 received mixed reviews last month.

Super Bowl City presented by Verizon was located in Justin Herman Plaza at the bottom of Market Street in front of the Ferry building. The event was open from January 30 to February 7, 2016.

The event featured NFL-themed activities for the whole family, food and drinks, and over 35 free performances. The City Stage presented by Levi’s included performances by Grammy-winning artists such as Alicia Keys, OneRepublic, and The Band Perry.

Cultural performances and displays that highlighted the Bay Area were also present, as well as food trucks selling locally grown foods.

“[There were] lots of people, NFL memorabilia, and a bunch of other stuff,” said Kyle Batza, a SRVHS junior who attended the event.

The security at Super Bowl City was phenomenal. “I thought there was plenty of security, [such as] people were armed with huge guns, and bomb sniffing dogs.” said Jacob Resendiz, SRVHS sophomore.

The event exceeded many fans expectations.  “There was no line, it wasn’t crowded because I went on Wednesday and it was way better than I expected,” said Resendiz.

However, the event disappointed some fans. “It wasn’t what I expected, a horrible experience actually, and I waited in a long line on Saturday but it was the day before the Super Bowl,” said Batza.
The mixed reviews question whether the event was worth the $4.8 million that the city of San Francisco spent on creating Super Bowl City. 3,500 homeless people had to relocate from the Super Bowl City area to a growing tent encampment under a highway overpass in the Mission District.
