It’s monday morning. Lilly wakes up at 5 am to finish the pile of homework that she didn’t get to over the weekend. Lilly’s grandparents were in town, so she decided to spend her time with them instead of doing her homework. She rushes through her work, so that she can also study for her Biology test that she has 1st period. She is feeling extremely overwhelmed and is not ready to start her day.

Homework on the weekend is cruel and unfair.

School already takes up around 70% of your day, so why should it take any time out of your weekend? The answer is, it should not.

With school, homework, dinner, etc. not much time is left to spend with family or having fun with friends. That time is usually reserved for weekends, but with weekend homework school seems never ending. Personally, when i have a pile of homework to do over the weekend I end up getting too stressed out, and not even doing it.

Studies from the U.S. National Education Association say that giving students homework over the weekend leads to a buildup of stress during a time when students are meant to relax and unwind.

The Los Angeles Times also states, “some districts have cut back on the amount of homework in the effort to consider children’s social development. In fact, the San Ramon Valley district modified its homework policy and no homework is allowed over weekends and holiday vacations, except for reading.”

But this statement is just untrue.

For being a student at San Ramon Valley High School, I know for a fact that our school does not implement this rule.  Every weekend I either have the thought of my homework stressing me out through the day, or ruining my plans. Weekends should be the time for us to relax and catch up with our social lives, but with homework looming over our heads that is just not possible.

“After playing volleyball for San Ramon Valley High School, I decided to join club. We have many games on the weekends, and it is so stressful to find time to do homework and half of the time I do not even get to finish.  I get doing homework on the weekdays because that is the time that we are learning, but weekends is too much.” Christina Dodd said.

Any good student does not want to get a zero on their homework, and have their grade drop. So, when there is not time for them to do it on the weekend, as a last resort they will try and finish in class. This takes their attention away from learning and ultimately takes their stress level to a high.

Changing the rules too weekend homework will be difficult, but with the help of students, teachers, and parents, we can do it.
