Sports Fans are Getting Louder and Louder

These days, sports fans are getting extremely into the games. People are painting themselves and wearing every bit of team clothing that they have. You can expect that fans will be fully outfited in all of their team’s colors and spirit wear. Also, some of the fans will paint their faces and bodies. The Seattle Seahawks fans are one of most team spirited groups in all sports. They also just set the record for being the loudest fans in sports. Now they are becoming louder and louder.

On Monday, December 2, 2013 the Seattle Seahawks played the New Orleans Saints at home in Seattle. During this game the Seahawks crushed the Saints 34-7 and the fans were out of control. The fans had a higher number on the decibel scale than they did on the scoreboard. During that game the Seattle fans broke the record for loudest fans in sports, beating the previous record of 137.5 decibels and made their own record at 137.6 decibels. This may not seem like that much of a difference, but it still broke the record.

The amount of sound developed in this stadium caused a 1.7 magnitude earthquake. If the stadium was an indoor stadium, like a dome, then people could have died because of the sound waves. People don’t really have any idea really how loud that is. A jet engine at 100 feet makes 140 decibels and that is just about how loud the fans were. 100 feet really is not that high at all, it’s approximately three stories high.

Although people out of Seattle might not care, what about the people who are at their local sports team’s stadiums? For example, at our own school there are houses right next to the football field and baseball fields. They definitely can hear all the fans cheering on their school or the team they like. Some of those houses that are right on the other side of a six foot high wall sometimes get balls flying and hitting their house. If this becomes a complaint, we would be at risk of having to shut games down. This cannot become a problem, we need to stay safe for the sake of our sports teams and school pride.
