The city of Chicago is split into five factions: Candor, Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, and Dauntless. Each represent a certain type of living, Candor is all about truth; Abnegation believes in being selfless; Amity holds true to peace; Erudite devotes their lives to knowledge; and Dauntless is about bravery and courage. In Veronica Roth’s trilogy, she tells the story of a sixteen-year-old girl, named Beatrice Prior, living in the Abnegation faction and changing to Dauntless.

In the first book, Divergent, Beatrice Prior chooses the faction she wants to go to after learning that she is Divergent and can fit into a number of factions. Knowing that her life could be in danger, she goes to the faction that anyone would least expect her to go to: Dauntless. There, she undergoes the first challenge of becoming Dauntless where she changes her name to Tris. While undergoing the courses of Dauntless initiation, she begins to catch the eye of her instructor, Four.

The book isn’t just about romance, but about the struggles and sacrifices that the characters make to fit in. Tris’s closest friends, Christina and Will, help her overcome the harassment of the other initiates. As she tries to hide her divergence, there is an epidemic wanting to purge out the ones that are Divergent. With the extreme fighting scenes and violence—not to mention the intense action—it’s difficult to put the books down. Throughout the book you watch as the characters mature and experience the downfalls of emotion and highlights of life. Their experiences relate to you and the connections you are able to make with them come into plain sight. The Divergent Trilogy is highly recommended by people of all ages. From a thirty-three year old to a freshman in high school, Divergent is loved by all who give it a chance.
