On November 4, 2025, Zohran Mamdani became the 111th mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He is the city’s first democratic socialist mayor and has a Muslim South Asian background.
Mamdani has had one of the most successful mayoral campaigns. He connected with voters who previously felt separated from the city’s politics, particularly by younger and working-class New Yorkers. He also campaigned affordability and community engagement, and addressed everyday concerns that the people cared about. Additionally, Mamdani gained attention worldwide through the digital media by engaging with people throughout the city. He posted online about his interactions and solutions for the city. Mamdani also addressed his visions very clearly. He became known to millions of users across the globe instantly since his marketing style was different, yet captivating from previous politicians. He also became known for answering complex questions honestly, as compared to other politicians that tend to avoid them.
Critics, however, question the feasibility of some of his proposals for New York City. They believe that some of his goals are unrealistic and unaccomplishable. Ideas for betterment are controversial because people question the practical impact and long-term sustainability of solutions, especially in a complex city like New York City.
Whether his policies succeed or not, his campaign has already influenced the future of governance. Younger generations are going to approach their campaigns much more differently than traditional methods in order to communicate to their audience.
