On November 6 the women’s varsity flag football teams of Granada and San Ramon Valley faced off in the NCS playoffs. After a grueling battle, San Ramon emerged triumphant, with a score of 14 to 7. According to the team’s head coach, Chad Cochran,”they [the girl’s] are laser focused and committed to trying their best.” Their true love for the sport assisted them on their path to success.
The journey to NCS was not easy for the wolves. The team was unified in their goal to ensure that Cal High would not repeat their victory over them. “[The players] really played their hearts out. It was an amazing team effort,” reflects Coach Cochran. San Ramon had won 24-13! “Beating Cal was a humongous confidence boost” says Kendall Layous, a sophomore on the team. “We were so hyped and grew so close as a team and at that point especially we were like ‘we’ve got this!” After the satisfying win, they were ready to bring their all to NCS.
This past season was just the third that San Ramon Valley offered flag football as a high school sanctioned sport. San Ramon has both a varsity and junior varsity team. Coach Cochran hopes to build a freshman team, as well as the pre-existing varsity and junior varsity in the next season. The program has grown, not only at SRV, but across the nation as well. Flag football is on its way to becoming an NCAA and an NAIA sport, and more colleges are beginning to offer scholarships. Flag football will make its debut appearance at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
